Yes the new diesel motor is one fine piece of engineering isn't it? If you want an X5 that performs well, is relatively economical and very quiet the diesel is the only option.

Re. diesel vs petrol I think a good way of looking at it is to look at the engines torque curve, specifically the area UNDER that curve. The larger the area under the curve the better the overall performance and 'drive-ability' - horse power is only part of the story!
