Thanks both! I can't find an easy way to see if the compressor is always running. I'll borrow a jack to lift the car up, and take off the splash guard and see how it goes. Both sides are dropping evenly, there is definitely not one side more than the other. I guess that means I should be looking more towards a leak near the compressor.
FYI - The price I mentioned was AUD... but still very expensive!
