When I got it [new] to about 22,000 miles, I had no consumption or very minimum consumption that the meter didn't really go down (if it did it was just 1/4 on the iDrive). I was redlining from day one and did a break-in change at 1250 miles (which according to the Blackstone report was full of metals, so good thing I changed it). Then changed every 5000 or so after that (alternating between doing it myself and the included maintenance—every report was clean).
Then from 22,000-27,000 miles I had to add 5 L which came down to 1 L per 1000 miles which got me quite worried. I had just moved from CA to NY and I thought maybe it was the stop-and-go traffic or different climate. Basically I had no explanation for the sudden increase.
I love flogging this thing every chance I get and if you see an X5 flying by at 120* mph on the Northern Parkway please don't be alarmed or chastise me, thanks. I actually drive pretty mellow most of the time especially in town or residential areas, just like to drive a little fast once in a while (okay off topic).
Anyways from 27,000-32,000 miles I did not need to add anymore oil, but the meter did go down to 1/2 to I assume that's 1 L, but still the sudden decrease is confusing. That's my last change, I hope all is back to normal as my next service is due in 4000 miles at 38,000 miles.
*120 used to indicate faster than traffic flow—may not be actual speed.
