Here is what the German website is showing for the engines on the 2014 X5:
MINIMUM OF FUEL,
MAXIMUM FORCE.
The BMW X5 offers a wide range of innovative engines.
The diesel and petrol engines in the BMW X5 are characterized by high efficiency and revving. They belong to the latest generation of drives that - like many other technologies, the BMW X5 - the ideas ofBMW EfficientDynamics have internalized.

BMW TwinPower Turbo eight-cylinder petrol engine

Powerful and refined: The top-of the BMW X5 xDrive50i comes with TwinPower Turbo at 8-cylinder petrol engine. He is in the speed range from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm with maximum torque of 600 Nm. The engine accelerates with 300 kW (407 hp) in a breathtaking 5.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h The BMW xDrive50i combines twoTurbocharger Double-VANOS and High Precision Injection (HPI). Thanks HPI fuel is most efficiently distributed in the combustion chamber, while Double-VANOS torque across all engine speed ranges across distributed optimally.

The xDrive30d seems to be the comprable engine. It is putting out 245bhp with 398 lb-ft of toruqe. Economy for that is 31 mpg. I don't know how the new BMWs are, but there used to b significant differences with exhaust where the euro engines got much better mpg than we would.

I would tak 31 MPG though...just wish I could order one now! the wait is killing me. I start thinking silly things like I'd be better off just getting the 3er Touring Diesel.
