BMW usually uses a 20w oil on the M engines. Don’t you have the S63 engine? If yes, it probably has several recommendations that probably include an LL-14 FE and/or LL-17 FE (fuel efficient) oil.

If LL-14 FE & LL-17 FE oils are some of the recommendations for your engine model…then the dealership was not incorrect in using an 0w-20 viscosity oil. This is not to say that other oil viscosities can be used…but you’re not limited to only one oil viscosity.

My M specifies LL01-FE only. In multiple places printed and online. Under the hood it specifies 0w30.

Where other people have flexibility is going with thicker oil, not thinner oil. In that case they can run LL01.

0w20 has never been discussed for our Ms with the S63 in all of the reading I've done on this forum and others about oil.
