Yes volvo decided to ditch the 5 and 6cyl cars due to CO2 emissions.
In europe both cars and car companies are taxed with co2 emissions. Thats why 4+ cyl cars are realtively rare in europe. And as volvo mainly is a european market operator and smaller brand in general (in contrast to audi, bmw and mercedes who have a considreable US share, comparable with what volvo has in europe) it makes sense to focus on 4cyl engines. Too bad really as their 5 cyl engines were awesome and very very reliable (the 5cyl diesels were even used in boats (Penta), so massive operating hours)
