i have to say though...traditionally, what I've seen as the owner of the E70 X5, when there's an issue endemic across the entire range (e.g. on the E70, diesel emissions equipment, driveshaft, etc), they tend to issue an extended warranty for the part at 10 years 100k miles.

I wouldn't hang my hat on past experiences, but a failure in electrical modules effecting the hybrid drivetrain is a pretty big deal that can be endemic to every 40e manufactured. It can even effect safety, which would require an official recall and reporting to the government regulator.

So I wouldn't worry about it at all at this point, especially in year 1 of the model range and ownership. I would worry about this if you were buying this in year 6 and beyond, but by then, hopefully major issues would be hammered out or at least identified.

I think that 8-year warranty is for battery life and its ability to keep a charge. Btw, what software updates has been needed on the 40e? I'm only aware of the level 2 home charging issue. (I have a vested interested, b/c I think I'm replacing my X5d with a 40e)
