I do not believe it is the windshield - I can feel the radiant heat when the sun is coming trough the windshield - the AC easily offsets it.
A northeast summer is a cakewalk compared to what we experience here in the Central Valley of California or Phoenix. I know of what I speak as we lived in Rhode Island for a number of years. A more likely issue may be a "cold weather" AC package in your build as others have mentioned.
