In order to achieve this BMW needs a new engine by end of this year.
I hear you, but I would not be surprised if they try to make adjustments to the current engines.

Is there a precedent for changing the engine during the 7 year product cycle for any model? I don't know....

EDIT: I quick google says the answer is yes. They do change engines for the facelift. Looks like they are doing it for the 3 and 4 series. Interesting....looks like the 40i is coming soon.....
