I have had them on 3 past X5s and now on my current 2017, and for me they are useful to just get my pants dirty!!
They are not wide enough to really use, even my 11 year old son does not use them. I do like they way they look, but find them 100% useless. Compared to the side running boards I had on my past Range Rovers and G-Class which are all robust and wide and really useful...I do not like, nor recommend the BMW ones.
