the one thing i like about the oem running boards is that they prevent the body paint from getting pitted from road debris getting kicked up. as for stepping on them? they are not that useful. too high and too narrow. for kids they probably are ok.
as for the romik boards, they sit lower and are wider. i can see them being more useful.
you do lose ground clearance though.
