I think the article mentions it because it's one of the more likely weapons to be encountered. The ballistic standards that the car meets doesn't specifically mention the AK47 as far as I've seen.
BR6: Rifle, 7.62mm x 51mm FJ/PB/SC rounds, mass: 9.5g, fired from 10m @ 830 metres per second, 3 strikes within 120mm radius. (impact energy 3290J ?)
No idea where an AK fits with that, but I'm guessing the standard is set higher.
Press release doesn't say much about resistance to explosives though.
edit: according to wiki, the AK-47 will fire either smaller, lighter or slower rounds than this.
