I think you're both talking about two different features.
The satellite imagery (on iDrive 4 at least) is available up to 0.5m resolution, it goes "rendered" beyond that.
3d rendering is available, with optional buildings in most cities.
They're two distinct options that need to be enabled in your nav settings.
