If $ is not a real issue, then IMO you'd better off keeping X5 and getting something for fun unless you really, really want to compromise and then do go for X5M or something with 0 resale value and insane straight-line performance as an RS6.
If it's really fun you're after (because us petrol heads and our family members usually have different definitions of fun: what I call fun, my wife calls insane), then it gets really complicated... I.e. with my M50d, which is a great car, I feel I still miss my E64 in so many ways. And that leads you to options and decisions... Porsche Boxter/Cayman GTS, Jaguar F-Type V6S, BMW M3/M4, etc. All cars have their + and - and it's a pain in the ass to choose even if you have the money to afford them.
