Update: Dealer to address the problem
I took my X5 by the dealer yesterday and a service technician came up to take a look at the dead pedal. He felt the amount of movement was excessive, but noted that the pedal is held in place by only the surrounding carpet and trim pieces. I have an appointment tomorrow to have them address the issue.
