I'm not a scientist (nor do I play one on TV-- much to my dismay) but I would imagine it might make it more difficult. The concept of layering different materials of different strengths (i.e., tensile, compressive or shear strengths) is used throughout the safety industry to make materials less resistant to breaking. It's the principle upon which our windshield shatter in a controlled way.

That said, I'm sure the puncture and blunt force would be enough to overcome any additional resistance.
