I can tell you that X5s can get this error for a number of reasons. I believe the most common fix is a fuel injector replacement, however plenty of other members have had other issues leading to this.
For me, BMW thought that my blown intercooler had overheated and damaged some of the internal components on my 50i engine. Ended up having to get the entire engine replaced, after almost 5000mi on it now haven't had any issues.
