Not even close to a gimmick.
The key fob's range is what, about 30 feet. So it allows me to start it about 6 seconds before I was going to get there anyway. So yeah, for me, until they fold this into the BMW Connected app, it's not much more than a gimmick. I suppose it would be useful for some circumstances, but not for me. I park in a secured parking lot at work, so being able to start it on my phone would be great, summer or winter, but using the key fob to do it does me no good. By the time I'm close enough for it to work, I'm almost there anyway. Does me no good at home either where it's parked in a garage. I would have step into the garage to open the garage door, at which point I'm 4 feet away from the car anyway, so referring to it as "remote start" is kind of a stretch. If it was 40 bucks, sure. A thousand bucks? Not for me.
