BMW DO have a solution - Its available outside North America - Auxiliary Heating is a separate 'engine' that works via the old BMW Remote app or now the new BMW Connected App or a separate 'key' fob. Or else you can set the time to switch on via the iDrive.
Works well..would not be without it even in the UKs somewhat temperate climate.
