As I've mentioned in another thread, one of the keys for launching a PHEV in North America is meeting California's EAT-PZEV smog emissions class so that it qualifies for a green carpool lane sticker.

Currently, the N26 is the closest engine to reaching that, and NO Diesel engine qualifies for it.

While I agree that the efficiency characteristics of a diesel are more suited to a hybrid platform, not being able to enter the carpool lane drops most of your clientele who are willing to spend $100k+ on a car that will never pay off in fuel savings.
