In search for answers, I came across this from a Google search:
"The most likely cause is worn valve guide seals and/or guides, but worn rings and cylinders can also allow oil to enter the combustion chamber. Replacing the spark plug will temporarily cure the misfire problem, but, until the oil consumption problem is fixed, the engine will continue to foul plugs."
I know the 50i eats up oil like no other. Is there a relationship between this and spark plugs drying up?

This confirms my suspicion that it's in fact a misfire (spark plug/coil) issue that is causing tugging/twitching and not a transmission related thing (at least half of cases)
