As Rob has pointed out, his manual suggests that the S1 setting does not matter. Accordingly, I cannot confirm whether all of the settings included in my previous post apply to all engines or diesel only. A new manual for a 35i or 50i tuned chip would clarify.
You will be happy to hear that RaceChip-Germany replied this morning with the following info.

in petrol engines only S2 has a function.
So you can put S1 to every position you want without any effect.

This switch does only have a function in diesel engines.
You can extend the activity time of the RaceChip to a longer rpm area.
The default setting of S1 is only an activity of 1500 until about 3500 rpm in diesel engines.

This function isn’t necessary in petrol engines though since we already use the longest activity time through the software we develop.
