I think it is difficult defining exactly where a smell/sound like this are coming from. I experienced it first time on a Toyota 2.2 DCat Diesel, could not isolate where smell came and noise came from - went to Toyota and he confirmed it was the particle filter cleaning. Two other Toy Diesels, my F25 and now E70 smells/ticks regular. Can off course not say that your sound is 100% related to this. Maybe check with BMW?
