CarPlay will require you to have the NBT2 (Evo) headunit. Model Year 2017 F85 will include the NBT2 as the new navigaiton system. NBT (which is in the 2014-2016 F15/6 & 2015-2016 F85/6) headunit is NOT compatible with this and will not be able to receive a software update or touchscreen capability even as a retrofit.

Don't bother thinking of NBT2 retrofit to replace the NBT unit ... new security implemented in NBT2 will lock the unit if it is installed into a vehicle which was not spec'd with it. VIN # is passed over the MOST bus to the NBT2 and when it detects a non-original VIN, it will lock-up. Only a dealer can unlock the unit.

If you want carplay, wait for a 2017.

I personally could care less and hate fingerprints on the screen, so I am happy that I am getting my 2016 with NBT unit. It also means I can update my navi maps myself for free using ESYS & map torrents readily available on the net ... downside is that the NBT2 has a 4G modem instead of the 3G found in the NBT unit ... so the NBT2 loads the widgets onto the screen much more quickly.

If you do care about CarPlay or are buying a 2017 X5/6 or X5/6M ... you can also code the new iDrive 5.0 layout (found in the new 7 series & recently released for the 3GT LCI press release) as they will all share the NBT2
