There are many reasons to go with RWD SUV over RWD wagon: SUV will be safer in a crash, safer out on road because better visibility over other cars, easier to ingress/egress, easier to load, etc etc. There are cons as well but to tell someone to buy a wagon because they want a rwd is silly.

As for resale, the original $2K difference will be much less in southern states. Lucky if you get $500-$1000 more than rwd after 3 years. Almost no difference after 7 years. This will be less severe in more inclement weather states.
