If you ask him for your production number, you can login to the BMW site and it will (should) tell you what the status is. The production number is 7 numerics, whereas the VIN is a whole bunch of alphanumerics.

If you don't have an account, you can create a new account by clicking on 'Register now for My BMW'.
You add a production number by clicking on 'View/Edit My Profile' on the left, then click 'Add a vehicle'. After you add it, it should show up on the left. Click on it under 'Track My BMW'.
