Having to hold on to the wheel kind of takes away the point of the function in my opinion so grateful for any suggestions.
It's a driver aid, not a driver replacement, so having your hand on the wheel and being able to respond if an emergency presents itself is why this is necessary.

The touch sensor is capacitive and uses body capacitance to trigger it. Any dielectric material should be able to do it, meaning anything that can conduct electricity. So if it can make your smartphone screen respond, it'll likely work on your steering wheel.
