I think it also has something to do with the size of European streets and roads. Many roads are basically the same size they were a hundred or more years ago when they weren't much more than cart paths. Buildings were built and land ownership was based on the narrow width of these roads and still carries over today. Europeans who visit the US, especially out west, are always amazed at the sheer expanse of the land. Since most of the roads, streets and highways were laid out after the car was invented instead of before, with buildings and land ownership developing alongside, it's just inherently built to accommodate bigger vehicles. I haven't driven in the UK, but I have in Germany, France, Austria and The Netherlands. Our large pickups would encounter a lot of roads, streets and parking spaces they simply could not use.
