Exact same thing happened to me, when it as -15 degrees in Chicago. I limped car to dealership. Dealer told me there is a service bulletin on this and there is a fix. So it's apparently a known, and fixable, issue. Unfortunately, dealer had to keep my new X5 for 3 days.
