Usually up North by the trails it helps to have ground clearance in addition to 4x4/AWD when the snow falls. There have been times I had to drive through 2ft of snow in Vermont to get home. That is why I still own my 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Good tires and 4-Wheel drive and I can push snow with the bumper. Very simple and easy to work on, parts are pretty cheap. Mine has 175k miles on it and has never left me on the side of the road.

Subarus are very popular up there as well, but the few people I have known with Subarus said they wouldn't buy one again. Huge amounts of oil consumption, head gasket failures, turbo failures, CVT transmission problems, etc.
