I think it would be difficult to bleed out the spring fully. You won't be able to reach the fitting when the spring is still in place so that won't work. On a F11 I replaced one without the use of ISTA (like you described) although that spring was cracked so badly it didn't hold the pressure anymore. After replacing it I placed back the fuse while still on the jack. Slowly lowering the car I could hear the compressor turn on one or two times.
