Many of you have already watched IND’s acquisition of our X5M, as well as our initial dyno testing of the incredible new Super SUV, found in the links below. In addition to product testing and development, our IND company cars serve a second interesting function: they enable us at IND to disassemble, inspect, and study these cars so that our clients don’t have to. Over the coming months we will periodically release images and descriptions of this amazing M truck’s systems, giving BimmerPost members a look into the inner workings on their X5M and X6M vehicles. We’ll start at the front of the car, with the air intake system.

As with most modern BMW M cars, BMW has created a stellar intake system to feed the new S63B44B engine. The new airbox directly feeds the turbos with air that is drawn from the very front of the car. The airbox is specifically sized from BMW to generate a pleasing sound, and is likely also designed to take advantage of low inlet temperatures.
We removed the factory airbox lid, expecting to find air filters with built in charcoal sub-filters. Removing these items (for off road use) is a common modification performed by many M car owners, and will net a few extra horsepower at no expense. What we found instead were generously sized air filters with no charcoal sub-filters in sight!
Although we at IND are tinkerers by nature, we have found that the original BMW intake system is a beautifully designed group of parts!
