Checked all the pictures and quickly glanced at a few posts. Some refer to it as stone Chips while others to paint being scraped off due to door and fender clearance. Mine doesn't have the clearance problem.

Imagine a single rock chip on your hood; a fresh little stone chip about 1/16th" in diameter (maybe even smaller) . Now multiply that by 20 or 30 in a 3 inch high and 1/4 inch wide on both hinges. That's what I have.
