Also I figured out that BMW actually sends the dealer a microSD with an updated firmware on it and there is a microSD slot on the module. The module is programmed to check the slot if there is a microSD present or not, and if there is one, it will then check if there an updated firmware on the card, and automatically update the firmware if necessary.
I imagine BMW will only send these microSDs to the dealers, but I'm thinking if there is a way to just get that image off the microSD, people can just fix this themselves without having to visit the dealer at all… in fact I don't know why BMW doesn't just issue this update online like they do for the iDrive software updates.
