I just changed mine out with Castrol Edge 5W30 and a Fram oil filter. I'm out of warranty. I change every 7000kms.
It's just like everything else; suggested and recommended may not always be what's best for your engine.
It may be a partnership or BMW trying to eeeek another MPG out of their platform.
Same goes with the gear oils.
