But it seems like that's missing the whole point of what makes this evolution of the technology special.
-Electric cars just aren't there yet. For some people with specific needs in specific places, they work, but for most of us, just not there yet. Lack of range and lack of charging stations and the time it takes to charge are, and will be for some time, a huge hurdle that most are not willing to deal with.
-Hybrid cars have never been worth it. For the extra expense, you get a few more miles per gallon. For most, it would take more than 10 years of ownership to just break even.
-Plug in Hybrid, however is a whole 'nuther thing. Doesn't sound like much difference to many who aren't paying much attention, but the ability to go 18 miles and attain highway speeds just on electric without ever starting the engine gives it the good attributes of an all electric car for many of us. But with a seamlessly intigrated conventional engine, it doesn't have the negative issues of a full electric. Range is not an issue. Going on a long road trip? Just fill it up at gas stations along the way like a normal car. It sounds to me like they are making this thing so you can't hardly tell the difference between it and a conventional x35i when you're driving it. The whole point is to make it the best of both worlds, to make it seamless, so when somebody says it won't work for them for long road trips, I just don't understand.
