It's not clear at this stage what online services will be offered for the USA market. In the past online services have being offered through BMW assist concierge package and uses the cars built in telematics for communication. Certainly that will be available again as next gen RTTI uses that system for traffic info.
What isn't clear is if BMW offer BMW Internet and BMW online that can make use of a external phone for data via tethering. This tends to be the way Europe went rather than the USA. In my e70 I coded the CIC for BMW online and BMW Internet and makes use of my iPhone for data. I would suspect that if BMW didn't enable this for USA markets you could code it yourself.
The BMW live portal though is pretty crappy with limited online apps and a user interface from the 80s.
Idrive next gen will arrive in 2014 ... Expect to see a massive change in useability and services offered. The last update done was merely a band aid.
