To @wjbender, I had the distance setting at maximum (three bars in HUD), default, and that controls the distance between you and the car you are tailing. I could reduce that gap somewhat.
Some people have coded to reduce it even more as the system is capable of handling a shorter gap that may not feel comfortable to some drivers.
