Seriously though is it really necessary to add weight, cost, and complexity to the car when all it requires is more common sense. The EU could spend half the money they usually would to "educate the public", and car makers save even more. Its a win win.
While I think the engineering and tech behind it is interesting, I tend to agree with you. On a side note, this reminds me of people complaining that with electric cars it is far more difficult to hear them coming, potentially causing accidents with pedestrians to increase.
