Sorry to hear, but you def made the right choice.
This is also why I don't understand when people say AS tires are fine in the snow. They may be acceptable for getting around in mainly straight lines, but throw in a little incline and/or need to take some evasive action and they turn into slicks. Worse as you go 20"+ in wheel size. I'm sure people will chime in otherwise, but I stand by my statement.
