Oil below minimum message. Dealer found coolant low.

It was about 1,300 miles since an oil change four months ago. Got the oil below minimum message. Waited a day or so until the X5M needed to be washed and headed over to the dealer. First time to this particular dealer and found them quite accommodating.

After waiting a reasonable amount of time I checked with the service department and the car was ready. Oil was topped off and the X5M was nicely cleaned.

While waiting for the X5M to be brought around the technician said that he heard hissing (?) under the hood and found the coolant a little low. Surprisingly I asked where could the coolant have gone. He said these cars use some coolant. I said that I never heard of that and asked how much it needed. I said less than a quart and he said yes.

I haven't seen any reports here regarding coolant loss.

Any thoughts?

The only times Ive had coolant issues are in winter when it actually condenses if its freezing out, it usually corrects itself once warmed up. But I see youre in NY, way too hot for that.

Im surprised they would tell u they heard hissing and assume nothing is wrong - I heard hissing the other day, but it was the bolt stuck in my right rear tire!

Thanks for the replies.

I am surprised too. He did say "these cars use coolant". I am thinking yeah maybe from a leaky head gasket....

That’s very odd the only way a car uses coolant is for it to be burning it which we all know is not normal, I would keep a eye on it and bring it back to the dealer if it re occurs . Using some oil is a different story as with turbocharged engines have some blow by and the oil gets pass the rings and into the combustion chamber.

I don't ever check coolant level. Now I will.
