Drivetrain malfunction and lots of thick exhaust smoke
2017 X5 5.0i, 47K miles. Has been pretty flawless until this morning. Was running errands in town, stopped at stop sign. Eased off and suddenly the car started shaking like crazy and huge plumes of gray smoke coming from exhausts.
Drivetrain malfunction error showed up, driving possible, but anything over 15 mph felt like the car was falling apart around me. Slightest bit of pedal and smoke pouring out. Pulled over and called a tow truck. Started up a couple times and got to the error message again. But when the vehicle got to the dealer, tow driver had no error showing and no smoke. Dealer said they will run codes but nothing appears wrong at present. WTF? I could not see anything behind me from all the smoke, car shaking like crazy for the two miles before I could pull over, and then its all OK again? Any thoughts or experiences like this one? |

I had the same symptoms on my F10 before - a Fuel injector took a massive dump. Even though it's a 2017, it may be covered under the 10 year emissions warranty.

Thanks, my main concern, other than of course as to what was going on, was what fluid produced the smoke and why the vehicle was shaking so violently when the engine seemed to be not having huge issues racing or dying. But maybe tomorrow the dealer will know more, will definitely ask about the ISTA and FOB

Heard from the dealer, cracked charge pipe into the Turbo, some PVC line issues with engine oil resulting in fouled plugs. Don't think the injectors were messed up but they will check. They are checking on the warranty situation also, as the estimate was just over $3K
Appreciate the input and help for sure |

I would recommend you find an independent BMW so though, the streaker always charges a lot more for out of warranty work. |
