I have a f15 30d x5 and its great and comfortable but the mrs drives it.
So I drive a 335d but now feel need more comfort (like the x5) but would still like power so thinking of buying another F1t in a m50d guise. Question is a. is the m50d harsh noisy and uncomfortable when compared to a 30d b. is the m adaptive suspension in m50d just same as 30d c. should I just accept im turning into a wuss and buy a range rover for comfort. |

I'm at the half-way house between your current 30d, and your aspirational 50d, in that I have the 40d.
My understanding is that the 30, 40, 50 differences are in the power and torque output of the engine, due to tune state and number of turbos (they are all 3 litre, 6 cylinder power plants). Suspension is a separate matter, specified independently of the engine. Key differences are determined by whether you have M-Sport or X Line. Your 50d would be M-Sport, so will have adaptive suspension, your wife's 30d could be either, so there may be a difference in handling. The other suspension variable is Dynamic Handling Package (DHP), which I'm lucky to have, that adds adaptive anti-roll (sway) bars and torque vectoring, to improve handling in corners. DHP could be in a 30d but not a 50d, it's down to how the vehicle was specc'd by the original owner. Personal experience, my 40d is quiet and refined most of the time, but provides all the power when I need, or want, it. The adaptive suspension coupled with DHP give me a handling experience that surprised me in a car of this size (my first SUV) |

As an M50d owner for three years now, I have had no issue with ride or comfort. I had a 30d many years ago and would say the ride is much smoother and refined than my previous model.
I have the third rows seats which comes with the air suspension which adds another dimension to the ride. I'm also on 21" RF tyres which does not help, but saying that the ride is firm and precise. The power is awesome with the three turbos and 0 -60 in 5.2 seconds is amazing for a 2+ tonne SUV. Your best bet is to test drive it at your local BMW dealer. You will not be disappointed. I guess prices are much more affordable now than when I purchased mine new For me it has everything I want power, smooth ride, plenty of room, high up driving and a bit of grunt.

If I were to go for the m50d it has to be black with preferably light coloured interior and 7 seat configuration. Dealers are shut so test drives have to wait I guess. Is your factory warranty out. Did you opt for extended warranty. Also is dynamic adaptive possible on 7 seater configuration opposed to just m adaptive and is m adaptive fairly sufficient. |

Not enough people want or would pay for a performance diesel in North America ... and I am sure emissions plays a role as well.

I also agree with the comments regarding the 40d, it has everything that you need and it has a lower insurance bracket. If you want more power than you can tune it but it's more than enough in Sport+.

I also went for the lighter colour inside (picture below) which gives a great contrast and I've been surprised it not been too difficult to keep clean. I had a protective coating added to the leather when I had the ceramic coating to the paintwork added so does clean well. My dealership warranty has just lapsed but decided not to renew as the cost of it was crazy - the chances are if something does go wrong over the next 12 months I'll used the money the warranty costs but I'm not expecting anything to fail on a three year vehicle Can't remember if I had the dynamic adaptive added to my vehicle when new but what I have works fine.

I've had multiple diesel x5's and was going to get the 50d but went for the m instead as I needed a change of fuel after so many years. (335d went for an M2C also).
The 50d is awesome with tree stump pulling torque and happy plodding but wakes up like the devil if prodded with a stab of the accelerator. The 6 cylinder bmw diesel is an engineering masterpiece and then bung on 3 turbos.... what an amazing meeting that must have been at Munich, not as good as the one where they said let's give this one 4 though |

I had a choice between the M50D in white or 40D in sapphire black. I chose the 40D only because it had just 1000 miles on the clock and the 50D had 6000. In terms of comfort and noise, they are almost identical. Both had adaptive suspension, but the 50D had 20" wheels and the 40D has 21" wheels. Hard to tell the ride difference between them and I have to say that although the 50D was faster, the 40D was definitely not slow by comparison. I would have bought the 50D if it had been in mint condition.

Good to see that there are UK members of this forum coming out of the woodwork in this thread
Good to hear you guys are enjoying your X5m and M40d both great cars as are all the X5s in the range. I'm told the new M50d on the G05 is even better, but cannot substantiate paying even more for one now. Bought mine new three years ago and love every minute I step in side her, and so far not got bored of driving it. My GAP insurance covers me for 5 years, so will be hanging on to her for another 2 years. My 4 year PCP comes to an end next year so will have to pay off the hefty lump sum - do you know whether BMW will refinance this or are there better options out there

I have to say that your carbon black with ivory interior is for me the perfect combination and looks superb especially with 699M wheels. I still like the look of mine which also has 699M wheels. Mine is just over 2 years old with 8000 on the clock, so I can't justiy replacing it yet. I am not sure I would want to let go of an M50D like yours. The G05 is very nice apart from the completely naf exhaust!

I am a massive Land Rover fan and in England they say I have green blood (classic Land Rover colour) but the range rover is no patch on the x5 unless off road ability is in the mix. Don't waver!
Photo of the x5m and my Land Rover just for kicks. Sorry for off topic! |
