PITA but it's done! :)
Just completed the knee pad install and damn was it a bitch (mainly the passenger side pad, clips in general, and getting the carpet panels back on)! Took my wife and I the better part of 2.5 hours. Good news though is that the results are worth it. It definitely wouldn't have been possible without the DIY guide from r33_RGSport (thank you sir).
Some advice for the passenger side knee pad install.... 1. Keep the 2 side screws in the pad bracket (the piece that goes on before that the pad attaches to) a little loose which will give you a some play when sliding the pad in place. As long as you don't snap/clip the pad in place right away you should still be able to get to the screws to tighten them down. 2. From the driver's side get down to eye level with a flash light/head lamp and use a flat head screw driver or some other pry tool (note the plastic trim lever kit I had wouldn't work because the plastic wasn't strong enough) to get the front clip up and into the hole in the bracket. For me what ended up working was sticking the screw driver under the clip and twisting it in order to displace the pad clip up and toward the bracket hole. I even lubed the parts with some oil as others had recommended which may have helped but it's hard to tell for sure. I spent at least a half an hour getting the pad in place because I was afraid of breaking it. I ended up bending the hell out of the clip, but managed not to break the plastic tab it's connected to, and it still clipped once it was in place. I've included a picture where you can see the front clip that needs to get up and over to slide down in the bracket. 3. After step 2 of RG Sport's guide, you can actually lift the split door center compartment completely and set it to the side. The directions don't mention this but I would recommend it since it gives you some more room Best of luck to everyone attempting this mod. It really steps up the sportiness of the cockpit. They should have included this in the M-sport from the start. And since I'm in Germany, I ordered mine straight from the local dealer in Stuttgart using the X6 part numbers someone provided on this post (or maybe it was another thread). Worked great. Part numbers for Dakota Leather (Black) were 51 16 9 299 125 (left) / 51 16 9 299 125 (right). **Does anyone know how to fix the picture rotation issue? On my computer the images are oriented correctly, but once they're selected from the attachment tool to be added to the thread they are no longer correct** Last edited by clemsonee; 11-14-2016 at 11:29 AM.. |
