Put X5 into Park
Find something new everyday, I'm sure you super knowledgable guys already knew this but if you want to put the X5 into Park, you can of course press the Park button, or today I found out that you can One Press the Start/Stop switch.
Sorry, it was a slow news day.... |

maybe it's just a safety feature? why would anyone turn off the engine when the car is in drive, so it would automatically park it. but never tried it, gonna try it today! lol.

It is a safety feature - meaning you shouldn't do it for no reason. It's to prevent your car rolling away and crashing. Always put the car in park before shutting off. Don't think of this other method as an alternative because it is not.

It's a great feature. I used to use it all the time coming from M cars with DCT. There is no P button on the shifter. Turning off the engine was the only way to engage Park.
Even though the new M trucks have conventional automatics, they use the same DCT shifter and will operate pretty much the same way. Old habits die hard.

Here is on more - If you open the driver's door when stopped, the transmission will shift to park when you let your foot off the brake. This prevents the car from rolling away if you forget to put it in park before getting out.

From what I have found online BMW has some cars that have no Park on the shifter, you just turn the car off to engage the Park position. But that was causing confusion so I think they added the P on the shifter.
I haven't found it listed anywhere that turning off the car to engage park is not a good practice. But its there if you want to use it. |

I was actually shocked when it happened first time. However, flicking it back by itself is better than alerting me with light/sound. IMO.

There is a big difference between an automatic and a DCT. If you think of a DCT in terms of a manual transmission, it makes more sense. There is no such thing as "park" in a MT. What you normally do with a MT is come to a stop with your foot on the brake and the clutch disengaged, turn the engine off with it in gear, then release the clutch. DCT works almost the same. Clutch is disengaged when you come to a stop. Then you turn the engine off, however it doesn't engage the clutch with engine off because it needs hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch, therefore a pin is engaged whenever the engine is shut off to act like a park function. But there is no park function when the engine is running. All you can do to keep it from rolling when the engine is running is put it in neutral and engage the e-brake, exactly like a MT.
As far as the automatic, it's all controlled electronically. The shifter is not physically connected to anything in the transmission like in the past. It's more like a glorified joy stick now, totally controlled by wire. So I don't really think there is much difference between putting it park then turning the engine off, versus just turning the engine off. Either way, a computer is sending an electronic signal to the transmission telling it to put itself in park.

If you "pull" the e brake on, it goes into park. That seems like the best single action approach to me. I don't let cars "rest" on the transmission so would always use the e brake with Park. This does it in one step.

Wait...so if you press start/stop button while driving, car will suddenly put it into Park????
That sounds little dangerous... What if you accidentally press it while driving on highway? |

No, it obviously won't do that. It knows if you are stationary. The computer logic checks for that before putting it in park.

Is this only if your seat belt is not buckled? I haven't tried it in the X but in the M with DCT, it automatically goes into neutral if the door is opened AND your seat belt is not buckled. But, as long as seat belt is buckled, you can still move the car with the door open if you want. I'll have to try it out tomorrow on the X and see how it works.

Not sure anyone would be willing to sacrifice their transmission to test out what happens at higher speed but I would hope that there is some safeguard to stop park being engaged at anything other than really low speed to avoid damage to the transmission. |

I want to find the coding to turn off the interlock so when your seatbelt is unbuckled you don't have to manually take off the park brake before driving off. With your seatbelt buckled you just have to engage D and drive off and the park brake releases itself for you. |

X5 going into park
So today i was driving to work and on the way there well stopped at a red light i took off my seatbelt, as i did this the light turned green and i hit the gas to go but i noticed it was in park. I then shifted to D and it went right back into park again. I dont know how as i didnt touch anything. however once i put my seatbelt back on then it let me put it in drive and stay in drive. has anyone else had this issue before ? Also i should mention that two days ago i unhooked the battery as i had to get it tested once i put it back though, none of my turn signals will work , my windows do not work and i get a warning saying lighting system stop vehicle.. could this have something to do with the SUV being put into park from D with out the seat belt on ?
