x5 ordering options
Hi x5 Experts!
Looking to build and buy my x5. Probably it will be x35d. Currently I drive 2008 M3 (E92) so you know my taste! Here is my couple questions: 1. If I go with M-package do I need DHP too or they overlap each other? 2. Is Active Steering ...useless? 3. To have firmer steering what option I should choose? I drove 35d and 50i and steering is too light to my taste. 4. Thanks a lot! |

1. Msport Line does not automatically give you the upgraded suspension ( in USA market). You have the option to choose either Adaptive M suspension ( $900 ) or DHP ($4,500 ). The Adaptive M suspension is a NO BRAINER.. but get the DHP if you can sink more $$ into it. 2. Active Steering isn't useless but IMO it is not needed, especially in the F15 X5 since the steering is already very light and "Easy" to turn. This option would be on the bottom of the list of features that are important to me. 3. Adaptive M suspension will change your steering feel along with the suspension/chassis. My steering is very firm, precise, and feels nothing like the F15 without this option. I am not certain about the DHP but if I had to guess it would be similar. Hope this helps. |

Thanks! It helps. The adaptive M suspension actually is included with M line.
DHP cost $4500 and I'll try to find x5 with it to test so I can see if it's worth it. |

Good luck finding a X5 with DHP on the lot.
I tried, Memphis, Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham, & Atlanta with no luck of getting to drive a DHP X5. In the end I just trusted what I had read about the package and I am pleased with it. I had already optioned out this X5 to $100k, what was another 4.5 gonna matter. |

M adaptive suspension is a $900 option. On a 70k car, might as well go for it. Like you, I'm used to heavy steering. I have had hydraulic steering in my last three cars. I was pretty disappointed when I test drove the X5 and the steering was so light. What are you doing to do, right? Seems to be the direction cars are going in. Maybe future BMW owners will be lucky and BMW will drop electric steering and revert back to hydraulic, like Infiniti is doing with the Q50. Quote:
I agree with you though, might as well add it. |

Like everyone already said the Adaptive M Suspension is a must have on this car. For $900 its really a no brainer. You REALLY notice the difference in how the X5 rides between the different modes. One second is a comfy soft ride and the next its nice and firm/stout ride. I almost think in Sport mode the ride is a bit too firm for city roads which is saying coming from someone who's use to lower cars with plus size wheels. I can't even imagine how much better DHP would feel......just not sure if it feels $4500 nicer.

DHP + Active M Suspension are the single greatest features ever produced for the X5. I would not buy one w/o either of these. Its a completely different vehicle and well worth every penny.
I have never owned Active Steering, but the steering is a breeze as-is...not sure why this is needed.

just talked to the knowledgeable (seems this way!) sales guy. His advise based on my taste: Don't go with M-line, do not select any line, take DHP and Dynamic Damper Control (included with DHP) and you done regarding suspension and steering. The M-line according to him gives you just badges and look and that's it!
Interesting.... |

I don't see Adaptive M Suspension as an option on the BMW USA build site. Is that something you special order from the dealer? Is it similar to the Dynamic Damper Control that can be added to the other X5 lines.
By the Suspension Option Chart that is on one of the posts here, it looks like the only way to get the X5 to drive as well or better than the Porsche Cayenne is to get an X5 with DHP - right. Adaptive M Suspension gets you close. |

So say you have to turn the normal steering 1 full rotation to make a certain turn, with active steering you may only have to turn it 1/2 a rotation to make the same turn. (not actual figures, just for example) Makes it feel more sporty and is great for people with shoulder problems aswell as parking in tight spots.. On the F15 and F16 Active steering is also hydraulic instead of the standard electric steering

MSport also gives you SAT (Sports auto transmission ) which gives you faster and crisper shifts along with the cool symmetrical gear shifts versus the big odd looking gear shifter on the Xline and Luxury Line X5. Not to mention the nicer beefier looking exhaust tips ( if you aren't getting the 50i ).

I think the 'Sport Transmission' is just give you paddles but it is the same transmission.
The 'M' look is definitively nicer looking but I also discovered that M-line doesn't have certain color options like brown/nappa mocca and it's important to me. The seats - I plan to go with luxury seats package and seats should be fine without M package seats. So, I'm leaning to non M line and spend the same $$$ on DHP and DDC. |
