2018 X5 xDrive35i Gas Mileage

Hello,

I have 2018 X5 xDrive35i about 26K miles and I am concerned with the low gas mileage.

I get about 15.5 mpg average city (without a traffic) driving with normal mode, put premium gas, and not an aggressive driver at all. And probably on highway 18 mpg...

Is this seemed normal? To give some history on my car..

BMW replaced new engine Sep 2021 (same gas mileages before & after)
Engine air filter replaced recently (same gas mileages before & after)
Driver's side front wheel bearing replaced (same gas mileages before & after)
Front tie rods replaced (same gas mileages before and after)

I read a couple of threads about the gas mileages and my current gas mileages are similar to people who own 50i with a 8 cylinders but mine is xDrive35i..(6 cylinders all wheel drive)..

While driving car with windows down, I hear a noise of metal grinding (not loud) so I took it to the service they replaced the driver's side front wheel bearing, but I still hear this noise, and didn't go back to the shop yet. It's not loud so when windows are closed I don't hear it. Not sure if this has anything to do with the low gas mileage.. or could it be something else?

Thank you in advance.

I have a same year xdrive 35i. What's the landscape of where you live? Is it hilly or relatively flat? Why did your engine get replaced? Seems like you've had quite a bit repaired for a car with such low miles. Take into consideration the weight of the vehicle - 5000lbs+ and factor in where you're driving mpg can vary. If I'm running around short trips to the store and whatnot, I'm in eco-pro. I commute about 55 miles one way and like yourself I'm not an aggressive driver. One thing I've noticed over the years having had vehicles with 20+ gallon tanks, I get better mpg when the tank is not full because of the weight of the fuel on top of the vehicle weight. I had a 2004 Chevy Silverado extended cab with a 5.3 v8 and a 27 gallon tank. It did better on gas around 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank. The average estimated mpg 18/24 with x drive. What gas do you use? Mpg was one thing I considered as I initially wanted a diesel but with the recalls of late I didn't want to chance it and the N55 engine had a great reputation.

OP--the 6cyl and V8 often get similar MPG when in the same vehicle. Your mileage seems about normal, similar to what my stock e92 with a similar engine got.

I drove 350 miles yesterday, didn't start with a full tank and never had to fill, still have over 1/4 I believe. I'm loving the diesel, mileage is better than my 318i and it has a much larger tank so it goes forever. It seems like it'll cost less to fill than my 535i but I haven't had it empty yet so I'm not sure.

I would drive it on highway on a full tank of gas to have a better calculation. City driving mpg can vary a lot depending on # of factors.

19 mpg in the highway seems low. I used to get 21 in my E70 v8. I'd expect around 23-25 mpg for highways for a 35i.

21.4MPG for our xDrive35i in mixed driving.

Yours sounds very low to me. I would be concerned, too.

What are your tire pressures?

Is your speedometer accurate when you pass police radar signs?

2017 X5 s35i, I get on average 14.3 mpg in city driving (heavy traffic).

I have yet to get decent mpg with any V6 car, they all suck in city driving.

2015 N55. I get 12L/100KM (19.5 MPG) in winter with my 19's and 11L/100KM (21.5MPG) in summer on 20's. Comfort Mode 99% of the time. 80 City / 20 Highway

Your numbers seem low. Tire pressure? The noise you speak of could be a excessively dragging rotor or wheel bearing on its way out which can both rob MPG.

Are you calculating manually after filling at the pump or relying on the iDrive or Dash computers to calculate? They are cumulative so ensure you reset them back to 0 to get accurate numbers and then drive a full tank.

Just because the dealer replaced your engine does not mean they changed your Sparkplugs… I would change the plugs to brand new ones.

Living in nyc

City 14ish it's crap or less
Long highway drives 24-26mpg can just get over 500 miles on a full tank (want to think eco does something but best I've saved is like 5 miles) driving between 70-90mph

2017 x drive 35i
Pirelli run flat tires non sport
