As a follow-up, we completed our consumption test and the engine used .1 liters in 1300 miles. They said normal use was 1 liter in 750 miles.
This gives me a little more assurance and will just have to keep topping it off as normal. We're patiently waiting for the LCI 50e to swap this thing out later next year. |

With that said I change mine in my M5 every 5k miles as I still get dealer oil at 10k miles and I drive the hell out of it. But I change our X5 50i around 7k-10k. My wife drives it now and only puts on less than 10k a year. But when I drove it I changed closer to every 5k. Not that I'm a shining example of what anyone "shoulda" do. Lol

So then do 10k oil changes lol nobody will stop you. Any bmw specialist will tell you otherwise. The dealer doesn't care about you. Basic requirements for our cars are oil changes. They love them. |

Okay. I failed a test before. It consumed 1.2L in the 1000 mile test. Apparently that’s within spec. 1.33 is where it’s out of spec. I just did another 1000 miles for a 2nd test. I’m bringing it in tomorrow morning to be measured.

Checking in on folks' status with the class settlement -- has anyone received feedback on their claim... a responsive letter, reimbursement check, voucher for BMW purchase, etc.?

Oil consumption test
Are they still doing the oil consumption test? I have a 2014 X5 50i. I parked my BMW in 2019 at 90,000 miles because I was sick of dealing with the BMW service departments in the Milwaukee, WI area. I purchased it in 2014 for $85,000 and went in on several occasions to tell them the oil light was coming on before it should have, only to have the guys in the service department tell me “you do not need to keep coming in to the dealership just put more oil in it”. Needless to say that was my last BMW purchase. I have a friend and he keeps telling me to take it in for the oil consumption test because I could get a new engine but I’m torn because my BMW service visits have been terrible. The new X5 is gorgeous but I refuse to buy another BMW because of our local BMW service departments.

Contemplating buying a low mileage (40k) '15 X50i -- doing some home work -- came across the settlement. Is there anything that can be done in a PPI to check health?
Also the www.isleysettlement.com web page is down. -- Is there an alternate web page? |

It's not clear in the settlement page. It says "After one failed Oil Consumption Test of a Class Vehicle, and confirmation by an authorized BMW Center that the Class Vehicle has an oil consumption issue, BMW NA will, at its discretion, either authorize the BMW Center to make one engine repair attempt or offer customer an engine replacement per paragraph (c) below. It's crystal clear that Engine replacement will set me back 60%, but it's not clear if there is a cost for the attempt to repair by BMW. I think there isn't a cost as there's no mention of this, however there is also no mention of it being at no cost. Does anyone have experience with the attempted repair? |

Our ‘13 F10 was slurping 2.5 liters in less than 1k miles. After authorizing repair/replace it took 4 separate repair visits to finally fix the issue. Am at +60k miles and now can go 7k miles (my change interval) without having to top off between changes.
I continue to be amazed by how many people don’t use the services of Blackstone Labs for understanding how to determine the exact change interval based on your unique driving circumstances. It’s the best $40 investment you can make.

I failed the consumption test back in Oct with 113k on my 2016 X5 50i. Unfortunately I didn’t learn about the settlement agreement until just before that time (my Indy shop informed me after I spend a good bit $ changing out the crankcase hoses). I had been adding oil well before that…not sure when it would have officially failed but certainly at a point where mileage would have been much lower….and lower mileage = lower out of pocket $ for engine replacement. Anyway, what’s done is done and the X5 is currently at Rockville BMW having the engine replaced. My contribution will be $11650 (75%). Not happy but I exhausted all other options, including contacting BMW NA on several occasions…..no customer loyalty provisions whatsoever. This is my 6th BMW and perhaps my last one. Engine replacement at 114K and owner responsible for 75% is unacceptable. Anyway, wanted to post on this old threat (surprised not more here) in the event I can be of assistance to anyone else in this situation.

You can: 1) spend the $ on a high mileage, fully depreciated car. Aka, you can expect to 20% of this money back, maybe less. 2) continue to drive it as you always have and just sell it whenever you want. Only out a few hundred dollars for the life of the car. The engine doesn't fail unless you run it low on oil. Even if you do that, you'd have to spend that money then, not now. |

Help please!
My 2016 50i with 97K miles just failed the consumption test… My 55% replacement cost is just over $10K after tax. BMW will not warranty a new engine. Not sure what to do, as honestly I’m a little ignorant on what else will need attention soon besides the engine… If I keep adding oil (avg 2 qts/2K miles) does that cause harm to anything else besides my blackened exhaust tips? What would be the expected life of this engine if it wasn’t replaced? I would keep this car for another 5 years if I could, so I’m not sure if it’s worth the engine investment. Please give me your educated opinions! |
