It's a legit assumption. You try to preserve engines and tires the best you can throughout the season and take the least amount of penalties you can but who was really expecting that pace from the W12? It seems like all those PU/ICE swaps between BOT and HAM was done to test the durability if they were to go 100% for the last races.

Seems like this is what Mercedes' game plan is going to be. You just hope that they don't run into hardware failures, can't be taking position penalties this late in the season and bank that you could catch up because of sheer pace.

It's a fair assumption. If those race results didn't happen and VER was in the lead, perhaps Mercedes switches to this strategy earlier. The idea of Mercedes potentially being conservative with their race plan is because there were races to have won and mathematically they were always still in the WDC hunt. Mercedes is only pulling out the stops now because there are no more races to give up on, HAM has to win all 3 races certain events need to happen to Red Bull for Mercedes and HAM to win.

There is no more room for trial and error, it's all or nothing here.

Now why does understanding the car make it faster? Because reliability upgrades to the PU are allowed so long as they do not increase power output. Mercedes was never able to max out their pu because of reliability issues, they finally figured out the cause, and fixed it so now they can max it out every time. Atleast that's what the team has said in terms of finding out what was going wrong with their pu, or they could just be taking a calculated risk knowing that there is only 3 races left and their engine can take full power for those amount of races left knowing they don't have to preserve it any more.


But now imaging the 2022 engine when they upgrade it even further and likely fixed these issues, then it can run full power all the time. That would be a crazy scary scenario for the entire field.

Could've would've should've. That's what they all say when things don't go their way, well that's reality accept it.

Lewis could've been a world champion in his rookie season if he didn't beach the car on the gravel.

Lewis could've been a 9x world champion right now if he won his rookie season and didn't have so many mishaps with relaibility and crashing in 2016.

Again could've would've should've, but reality is often not nice.



Also if you call Lewis a cheater for silverstone, then that makes max an extremely dirty cheater for all the times he pushed lewis off track including this weekend, and for all the dirty weaving defending he does. The reason why Lewis didn't shunt into a 51G crash was because he was mature enough to back out. You can't have thinks just your way, if you want to say someone is a cheat for doing a certain move you must apply it to your own favorite driver.

Yup saw it, and that could very well be the case if indeed they are risking it. However unlike the shuttle where they were pressed to launch and a delay would cost weeks and millions of dollars, all mercedes has to do is take another 5 place grid penalty if they spot any small issues. They know the car is unreal fast and can blast through the grid like it's nothing so the comparision isn't direct.


On the other hand if mercedes did indeed fix the issue then it will just be super fast from now on with zero consequences.


And also don't forget mercedes, is extremely resourceful their engineering is damn good they can model scenarios extremely well as shown by their ability to tune their damper for squats are specific loads. This means even if they did gamble with reliability it is a calculated and within the acceptable margins of risk and not a gamble. So likely a pu failure will not occur.

You do realize the DRS flap was only bigger on the right most corner right? Only a fraction of the wing was off and by 0.2mm... That is more than likely an install error...


The only thing going on is Mercedes have fixed their reliability issue, or are running their pu to the max forgoing any worry about reliability.
