I guess is misunderstood the question.
When you said garage door opener, I took it as the one mounted in the garage. That’s what we call it. I didn’t do anything to the buttons on my rear view mirror other than program it. |

I think there's something wrong with the bmw opener in my mirror. I just don't understand how my Lexus and e46 m3 can open the garage from a few homes away 🤔

My built in garage door opener has terrible distance. I literally need to be 3 feet away from my garage before it acknowledges it. Is this common?

I was able to program a Honda Accord, but not the BMW or Audi. But finally made it work by using a different remote. I documented my solution here in this youtube video. Hope it helps. I suspect that the German cars are not compatible with certain remotes.

For some brands if may be a frequency issue in the car. even though we have newer cars, some are still using old and outdated tech since its licenses independently. solution is often available from garage door company. For chamberlain you can get a frequency repeater (complain to the right person and they may send for free). Basically a repeater box you plug into an outlet near the opener and program a one button remote to the opener. You then use the one button remote to program the car; it translates the old tech signal from your car to the new tech signal of the opener.

thanks for this. i remember few years ago i got a new direct drive liftmaster and my e46 m3 (2004) didnt work with it. i ended up getting this repeater which allowed the newer garage opener to work with the older cars.
now that i no longer have the e46 m3, i'm thinking i need to remove the repeater as the 2017 x5m probably does not need it. in fact, it may be conflicting reducing my range Quote:

Door opener from US to be used in EU
Hi All,
i have been reading a lot of information on this forum which have been so useful ! What brings me here today is the BMW garage door opener. I intend to retrofit one in my 2016 x5 f15 car but only found on ebay USA models. Is the homelink from US compatible with EU garage doors? in my case i need 433 MHz.. if someone can advise, would be much appreciated. |

The part nbr index may also have additional info in the supplemental columns if different frequency are used in Europe, too. If you're not familiar with any of the online part database sites...here's a couple of links you can use:
Using a generic look up for a European F15 X5...the part nbr search only pulls up Euro versions of the X5. You can click the links below, then enter your VIN info...then go back to the diagram to see if any USA models appear with the 11 digit BMW part nbr required for your X5. If any do...then you can use that part nbr...but if not...the frequencies are probably different.

Thanks for the reply.
I did what you suggested and found the parts numbers for US and EU are one digit different.. sounds that i will have an issue with the US homelink and my EU garage door .. |

My brief search and your research and conclusion are on the same page. But now that you have a Euro part nbr plus if you look again at the part database site (when you click on the part nbr)...you also get a list of other part nbrs that are retroactively exchangeable. You can type or paste any of those numbers into a google/internet search box (ie "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx"...where x = the actual BMW part nbrs) and search for used or new ones that will work for your application.
Good luck.

I also struggled with the Homelink programming. I have a 15 year old Genie garage opener and my remote control was a universal handheld unit made by Skylink. After 30+ attempts of every possible permutation on the instructions, and reprogramming my remote control, I gave up on this remote control. It could never get the LED on the X5's rear view mirror to go into rapid flashing mode. I didn't have a Genie original handheld, but I did have a Genie original numerical keypad (battery powered) fixed to the wall outside the garage door. I unscrewed the keypad from the wall and held it next to the X5's rearview mirror. it worked like a charm. The LED in the Rear view mirror went into rapid flashing mode very quickly. After putting my Genie opener into Learn mode, then 3 quick presses of the button under the rear view mirror, and it was all programmed.
The lesson is, a generic 3rd-party remote controller may not work. The original remote control from the manufacturer of the opener may work much better for you. |
